FTW! Comcast to limit how much broadband users can download

This can’t be good for people who like to download movies, music and photos, watch videos, etc. (which is pretty much everyone).  Gizmodo is reporting that Comcast will officially put bandwidth restrictions on it’s broadband Internet customers starting October 1st.  You cannot cross the 250GB barrier other wise you are at risk of having your account cancelled.

Comcast says in order to break that barrier, a user would have to:

  • Send 50 million emails (at 0.05 KB/email)
  • Download 62,500 songs (at 4 MB/song)
  • Download 125 standard-definition movies (at 2 GB/movie)
  • Upload 25,000 hi-resolution digital photos (at 10 MB/photo)

I know, right now, it’s not very likely that many people will reach that limit, especially since this restriction is being held against residential Comcast customers only, but with more and more media being distributed through the Internet, and people renting high-definition movies, etc. through their TiVo’s and AppleTV’s and the like, will Comcast grow with the market and increase bandwidth or will they create another opportunity to gouge their customers?

We’ll see!
