Modesto deals with Free Speech versus Wackaloonery

Surely anyone living in Modesto who has gone downtown during the weekend has experienced the crazy preachers standing on their egg crates with a megaphone and signs in their hands, spewing hate regarding, homosexuality, immorality, or anything else that doesn’t fit their narrow point of view; commanding authority from imaginary gods.

Well a local crazy, Kevin Borden, who has been doing this for a while (I’ve seen him proselytizing at the mall before too, but he doesn’t scream or amplify his voice there) is suing the City of Modesto for free access to a public square downtown in front of the Brenden Theatres on 10th Street between J and K Streets.  The public square is blocked off because the Brenden Theatres rents the space out due to Borden harassing people going into the theater and ruining the outside ambiance from him screaming at sinners.  Borden hasn’t applied to rent the space out himself.

Borden claims there is a conspiracy between the City of Modesto and Brenden Theatres to shut out his right to express his “genuinely held religious viewpoint” as given authority to him by the Bible.

He is being represented by the Alliance Defense Fund, a non-profit Christian organization whose stated goal is to defend “the right to hear and speak the Truth through strategy, training, funding, and litigation.”

ADF’s President, CEO, and General Counsel is Alan Sears. He co-authored the books: The Homosexual Agenda: Exposing the Principal Threat to Religious Freedom Today, and The ACLU vs. America: Exposing the Agenda to Redefine Moral Values.

Unfortunately, I don’t think the city will be able to protect the businesses downtown from this nutcase and others screaming and harassing patrons, like Brenden Theatres tried to do by renting out the space.

Whatever.  He is a douche bag.
