Atheists in Foxholes
I’m sure most of you have heard the story, but I thought I’d just hand out my kudos to Army Spc. Jeremy Hall for standing up for what he believes and making a point to emphasize the seperation of church and state. Unfortunately, he was forced to help America remember how important this distinction is at the cost of his military career.
Hall was discriminated against in the United States Army for not being a Christian and not participating in Christian related activities. According to Wikipedia, his superior officer, MAJ Freddy J Welborn, threatened to bring charges against him claiming he was violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice by organizing an atheist meeting. He was subsequently harassed, denied promotions and assigned a full time body guard because of threats to his life.
Hall has filed suit against the United States Army with the help of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation claiming that they have become a Christian organization.
During a recent CNN interview on Anderson Cooper 360 with Jeremy Hall, he had some great responses to the questions asked by reporter Randi Kaye.
Kaye reported that when he was nearly killed by an attack on his humvee, he was asked, “Do you believe in Jesus now?” He responded, “No, but I believe in ballistic armor.”
When asked by Kaye, “Do you think having faith makes you a better soldier?” He responded, “I think being a soldier makes you a better soldier.”
