I just got wind via the WordPress Planet blog that Automattic has taken on another project called BuddyPress. BuddyPress is an open source project by Andy Pealting used in a popular female college student website he built.

It utilizes the WordPress MU release to allow for personal profiles, journals, polls and VERY interestingly, a private messaging system. All with the WordPress CMS! Andy will be joining the Automattic team full-time to get this out.

A visit to BuddyPress.com shows only a splash page and Automattic’s logo, for now.

I have been looking for a solution to plug into WordPress for a long time, and now it looks like we will have one soon enough. Directly from Automattic (originally through Andy of course). Woohoo!
