iPhone SDK: Stick with jailbreaking

iPhone SDK

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple will be gathering with developers next Thursday, March 6th, to discuss their software road map regarding the already late iPhone SDK. The SDK will support developers in creating native applications for the iPhone.  Right now, the only way to get native apps on your phone is to jailbreak it, a method that involves ‘hacking’ the phone into an unauthorized state. Doing this voids your warranty and bars you from receiving any support from Apple if they do find that your phone has been jailbroken.

There has been a lot of grumbling in forums and other blogsites about how Apple is going to allow developers to release their iPhone software. The general consensus is that software will be distributed through iTunes, allowing Apple to keep tight control over which apps get distributed and which ones don’t.

I think it will end up being better for iPhone users to continue support for the “jailbreak community” if this “lock down” methodology is, and probably will be, adopted by Apple for the iPhone. There are hundreds of apps available on the iPhone if you do use the jailbreak.

Depending on how strict Apple is with their approval process, the iPhone SDK could make or break the jailbreak community.

I’m sticking with my jailbroken iPhone. What about you?
